I had the pleasure of working with the team behind Perth’s newest comic book and pop culture shop – Chaos Pop.

The new website and online store compliments Chaos Pop’s physical store in Cannington, offering the same product range and specials and all the latest pop culture news via their blog.

The team behind Chaos Pop also wanted to create a unique and pain-free user experience where customers could order and manage their own comic and magazine subscriptions via a portal built into the website. The portal is updated monthly with new releases and pre-order titles available the following month. This portal can also be accessed in-store where the team can manage customer orders and subscriptions face-to-face.

Chaos Pop offers pop culture fanatics the latest and coolest of pop culture paraphernalia including comic books, toys, video games, statues, clothing, collectables and much, much more.

Nowadays, it’s not uncommon for businesses to purchase professional images from photography websites (also known as ‘Stock Image’ websites). You may have heard of a number these websites such as iStock and ShutterStock.

Purchasing stock images or hiring a professional photographer for your next project may not always be the most cost effective option for small businesses. However, you can still achieve the same result and make your business stand out from the crowd without breaking the bank.  Thankfully, as is the case with most things on the internet, there are a number of free alternatives!

I’m talking about websites that now offer free photos for personal and commercial use. Yep, no strings attached, high quality FREE stock image websites are popping all over the place.

It’s exciting to see such amazing images in both subject and quality freely available!

Here is a list of my top 5 free stock photography websites (in no particular order):

1. SPLITSHIRE

SplitShire is  a collection of shots from Italy based photographer and graphic designer, Daniel Nanescu.

The collection has a tonne of categories ranging from food, fashion, landscape and technology – to name a few. Split Shire is updated on a regular basis as well, so it pays to check back each week to see what’s new.

2. GRATISOGRAPHY

Gratisography offers a collection of quirky, abstract and still life photos that would make the perfect feature image for your upcoming article or brochure design.

With its continuous scrolling feature, you’ll find it hard to break away from it’s amazing gallery.

3. UNSPLASH

Running since May 2013, Unsplash collates free stock images from around the web and brings them all together in the one place.

Users can freely submit their photos to the database with the team at Unsplash making 10 new photos available every 10 days. So make sure to check back regularly.

4. PICJUMBO

Open since November 2013, PicJumbo has a an enormous collection of images to choose from.

With the ability to break your search down via category, it would be hard not to find something you’re looking for here. My only complaint is that the search bar hiding on the right hand side of the page is a bit hard to see, so keep an eye out for it.

5. PUBLIC DOMAIN ARCHIVE

Public Domain Archive is another site collating images from around the web. The ever growing collection offers modern and vintage images as well as serving up hi-res images of some of the world’s most famous photos that are now available in the public domain.

The site is set out like a blog, with each new image in its own post. Some posts can contain around 50+ images, so you may have to do a little bit of searching, but the rewards are very satisfying.

Earlier this month WordPress released their latest interface, WordPress 3.9 or ‘Smith’ in honor of late great Jazz musician Jimmy Smith.

The latest update to the WordPress interface sees the introduction of some great new features along with some old favorites getting much needed updates.

WordPress Visual Editing Made Easier

The updated visual editor has improved speed and better support for mobile meaning easier editing on the go! But one of the most handy features is the ability to now strip any unwanted code when you copy and paste content from a third party source like Microsoft Word.

What does this mean? This means that your copied text will now be pasted as plain text, leaving behind any annoying font styles, sizes or formatting issues! Your content will be pasted as plain text ready for you to format inside the WordPress editor itself.

Crop Images Easier

Cropping images has now become much easier with the ability to crop, scale and resize images live inside the editor.

Image Uploading Made Easier

Although the ‘Drag-and-Drop’ image upload feature is nothing new, WordPress has simplified image uploading even further. By allowing users to simply drag and drop the desired image from your folder or desktop straight into the editor, they have reduced the need to continually open the Gallery.

Easier Galleries

Give your posts or pages a unique touch with dynamic photo galleries. Select the images you want to include and let WordPress do the rest.

Watch and Listen

Another advance is WordPress’ new playlist feature allowing you to create video and audio playlists using the content you have uploaded to your site. This is a great option for musicians or video bloggers looking to showcase their work.

So there you have it! The new WordPress 3.9 is definitely a right step forward for one of the most forward thinking open source content management systems out there.

The homepage of this site is based on the hugely popular Pinterest layout and is also a responsive design, making it easily viewable on all handheld and tablet devices.

Designed as the bands new online press kit and biography, we have created something that was clean and simple, while still allowing the band to post updates and stories via their new blog.
